Faith Like A Child
This past summer I have been working at the Downtown Olympia YMCA for summer camps. It has been such a great opportunity to meet and build relationships with the kids who have attended. Toward the end of each day at camp, we would move all of the kiddos into a cozy loft where we would play games and hang out for a bit until their parents picked them up.
Earlier this week when we were in the loft, a younger girl around 7 or 8, came up to me asking if she could sing a song to everyone. At the time we had about fifteen to twenty kids, so I gathered everyone and we all sat down to listen to her sing. As she began to sing I began to recognize the song she was singing, “Heaven Knows” by Hillsong United. This is the chorus of the song:
I can hear it now, the everlasting sound
Roaring like a lion, deep within me
I won't hold it long, I wasn't made that strong
Sweet surrender, Hold my heart and not let go
I’m letting go, and Heaven knows I love you so
This young girl had the courage to stand up in front of a group of kids, who she just met that day, to sing a song that declared her trust, surrender, and love for the Lord. When she finished singing, every child in the room was clapping and cheering. Now, I doubt every kid knew the exact meaning of the song or could hear every word she sang, but she clearly brought the joy of the Lord to the room through her faith.
Matthew 18:3-4 says, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”
Jesus’ desire for us, is that we set aside our pride in order to come before Him, humble and vulnerable. Just as children rely on their parents to provide food, shelter, and other basic life necessities, we should rely on God. He is our Father in Heaven, He wants us to fully trust and rely on Him for everything. When we approach God with a childlike faith, we become sensitive to His Spirit and have a greater revelation of who He is.
When we get to the place that we don’t care what anyone else thinks, because our eyes are only focused on what God says and thinks, we can step out courageously and share God’s love and truth.
I am praying for you today that your faith and trust in the Lord deepens and that you come to a greater understanding of His love for you.
