Thinking Ahead, Because of What He Says

I am a goal person. I don’t share most of my goals, because many of them are far out in the future, and some of them are pretty radical. Even still, I think about them all the time. 

By no means do I think everyone should think that way, but I do think that’s a good quality to have.

The downside to being a goal person like that, is that you can easily get lost in the long term, and forget about, or even neglect today. 

Over the years I have watched many people who walk through life without troubling themselves with what is further ahead than the next step or next project. In some ways I envy their perspective, living in the moment, without concern about the mountain ten years ahead. In other ways, I wish I could encourage them to think further ahead, so they would experience the excitement in the steps they are taking today, seeing how they build together into the greater thing in their future.

I love that about people though, the many ways we think, plan, dream, and respond to life. There is so much diversity and endless ways to do things. It’s like art, all of it is beautiful but there are so many ways to create it.

Since I can’t help much to offer insight for other perspectives, I would love to take a minute to share some of what goes on in my heart and mind from my perspective. 

If you have spent any time with me, you have heard me talk about how God has amazing plans for us, how He made each of us so specifically and uniquely awesome, and how before time, He set in motion good works for us to walk in. (Ephesians 2:10) 

King David wrote these two awesome verses, that I think really speak to this reality.

Psalm 32:8 says, I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

and

Psalm 52:2 says, I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.

If Ephesians 2:10 is true, and if these two passages in Psalms are true, I mean if they are REALLY true, I think we should pay such close attention to how we spend our time, to what we do, to how we live, to how we treat others, and how it all ties into our future.

God, yes GOD, desires to instruct and teach us to walk in the great plans He has for us. God desires to fulfill His purpose in our life.

It’s not about vanity, it’s not about delusions of grandeur, it’s about Him and His heart toward us, toward me. It’s believing that He loves us that much. It’s about taking a deep breath in concerning His heart toward us. 

So when I think about my life, I think about what He put in me, the passions that stir in my heart when I read His Word, when I spend time in prayer, when I worship Him, and when I spend time around people. 

For me personally, I am constantly captivated by how amazing He made the church body. Everyone matters, everyone is gifted, everyone is called, everyone deserves honor and a voice, and He calls it family. I love that! Also, I am constantly stirred with the great honor it is to be a leader in His church. How it doesn’t look like leadership anywhere else. It’s about serving Him, by serving others. It’s about helping people to see just how amazing they are. It’s about helping people to see past a tough moment, it’s about helping people walk in all He has in store for them, and encouraging them to share with others, every great thing He put in them. 

The truth is, He is the One who put those passions in me, and that blows my mind.

This focus causes me to see the things in my life that stand in the way of that kind of journey, and I desperately want to get rid of them. This focus causes me to see just how great a work God can do in and through His church, and I want to be a part of that. 

This focus also causes me to see, even on days where I am having to look through insecurity, fear, and doubt, and I still see that I am meant to walk in greatness, to do great things, and walk in a way that makes big impact, brings real life, and helps countless people. 

So when I look at my future, I set goals about walking in that. 

Really, at the end of the day, it isn’t even about the specific goal, it’s about believing that it’s the kind of life I am walking into, the kind of life I am meant to live. 

Sometimes the goals change, sometimes the focus changes, sometimes the direction shifts, but it never shrinks back. How could it shrink if that’s the kind of life I’m meant to live?

So my advice to you, take some time to really get a grasp on just how great God made you to be. Take some time to wrap your heart around just how much He loves you, and how much He loves this world, and how He wants to share that love with you, and how He wants you to share that love with others. 

Then look to your future, and see it with those things in your heart and mind. 

I think it would be simply impossible to not see greatness on the horizon.
